Board a flight from Lima to Cusco, where upon arrival, you'll be warmly greeted by your designated representative. They will introduce you to your private guide and driver, who will accompany you throughout your stay in Cusco. From there, you'll be transported in a private vehicle to the enchanting village of Yucay.
Yucay stands as one of the most picturesque villages in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. While it may not be among the most frequented tourist destinations, its allure lies in its mysterious charm. This charm may emanate from its Inca heritage, the traditions of its people, or perhaps the valley's optimal climate and fertile lands.
During the Inca era, Yucay served as the residence of emperors Huayna Cápac and Sayri Túpac. In colonial times, it held great significance as the 'Yucay valley' encompassed other towns like Maras, Yanahuara, Urubamba, Chichubamba, Huayoqari, Huayllabamba, and Urquillos.
While in Yucay, you can explore the Inca Terraces and witness the cultivation of a variety of local crops. As the day draws to a close, bask in the splendor of a sunset surrounded by nature and revel in the breathtaking, hidden landscapes that grace the Sacred Valley.
Yucay Church
Explore the lesser-known Pumamarca ruins, a hillside fortress guarding the entrance to the fertile Sacred Valley. Positioned on a steep slope overlooking the convergence of the Río Patacancha and Yuracmayo rivers, these ruins offer panoramic views away from the tourist crowds. This half-day trek covers about 6km (3.7 mi) or two to four hours of hiking. We offer the Pumamarca ruins trek on a private basis, part of a tailored Peru trip, not as a standalone tour.
The trek commences at the Pallata community, situated about 20 minutes past Ollantaytambo. You'll walk approximately 2km (1.2mi), taking about an hour and a half, through terraced countryside, passing local houses for a glimpse of daily life. The uphill hike gradually ascends to the Pumamarca ruins, where your guide will tour you through various structures, including ceremonial buildings, storage houses, and enclosures. Notably, this is where the Spanish suffered defeat against the Incas.
Afterward, enjoy a moderate descent along a different path for about 4km (2.5mi), taking approximately two hours. Follow ancient aqueducts toward the Conchapata terraces, where a private picnic lunch awaits. Your vehicle will be ready for your return when you finish.
Pumamarca Archaeological Remains
We will take the train to Km 104, where we will embark on a approximately 6-hour hike. We will start by crossing a bridge that spans the banks of the Urubamba River, beginning at the archaeological complex of Cachabamba. Then, we will ascend towards the ruins of Wiñay Wayna. Access to this site is only on foot, and it is the closest archaeological site to Machu Picchu. Our next stop will be the Inti Punku (Sun Gate), where you will get your first incredible view of Machu Picchu, a sight that leaves everyone in awe. From here, we will begin our descent towards Machu Picchu.
This day is when we will visit Machu Picchu. We will take the bus from Aguas Calientes to the Inca citadel, where your guide will provide a complete tour of the places you choose to visit. Feel free to ask any questions you have about the ancient Inca citadel and the new wonder of the modern world. At the end of the tour, we will return to Aguas Calientes by bus.
We will leave the incredible Inca citadel of Machu Picchu to return to Cusco on a luxury train, where you can enjoy a very pleasant landscape on the way back and, depending on the trend, enjoy a performance by the train staff. The train journey lasts nearly 2 hours, and the drive from Ollantaytambo to Cusco is also 2 hours.
Upon arrival at Ollantaytambo train station, you will be met by a representative of Andean Exclusive and transferred approximately 2 hours to your hotel in Cusco.
Huayna Picchu Trek
Discover the outskirts of historic Cusco with a 4-hour tour led by our expert guides. While the heart of downtown Cusco is captivating, the city's outskirts hold extraordinary Inca ruins waiting to be explored.
Your tour begins with a hotel pick-up, and you'll have the flexibility to choose from various significant Inca archaeological sites based on your prior exploration of Cusco. The highlight is the temple-fortress of Sacsayhuaman, perched in a commanding position overlooking the city.
Sacsayhuaman is a unique Inca site known for its megalithic architecture, featuring impressive zigzag terrace walls made from some of the world's largest cut stones. You also have the option to visit other archaeological sites nearby, including Tambomachay, believed to be a sacred spring water source to the Incas, Quenco, a stone labyrinth, and Puca Pucara, a tower within the Sacsayhuaman archaeological complex.
Explore Cusco on foot with a 4-hour tour led by an expert guide. Begin your journey at the Plaza de Armas, where you'll embark on a walk through the city, originally designed by the Incas as a pedestrian-friendly environment, evident in its narrow alleys.
The tour showcases the exquisite Spanish colonial architecture and ornamentation, strategically overlaid on Inca foundations, highlighting the religious and political influence of the Spanish conquest. Beneath the colonial layer, you can still discern the enduring remnants of Inca Cusco, manifested in solid stone.
Your trek will take you to Qoricancha, the opulent "Temple of the Sun" of the Inca Empire, and the impressive Cathedral, housing Cusco's colonial art and significant relics. Afterward, customize your experience based on your interests:
Explore the Chocolate Museum for a journey through cocoa's history, biology, and production of organic cocoa products.
Visit the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, dedicated to ancient Peruvian cultures with a vast collection of artifacts.
Immerse yourself in the vibrant San Pedro market with local produce, meat, and Andean flavors.
Wander the picturesque streets of San Blas, known for its artisan shops and charming colonial facades.
Discover the Concha mansion, home to repatriated Inca artifacts excavated by Hiram Bingham, displayed in a beautifully restored colonial mansion.
Customize your Cusco experience according to your preferences.
Cusco Main Square
Explore the southeast of Cusco on a captivating tour, brimming with colonial churches, Inca and pre-Inca ruins, and breathtaking landscapes. Your journey begins in the morning with a visit to Andahuaylillas, a charming village nestled amidst mountains southeast of Cusco. Here, you'll encounter the magnificent Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, renowned as the "Sistine Chapel of America" due to its splendid murals and an original, fully restored organ.
Next, your exploration takes you to Pikillacta, an expansive site housing the sole ruins of a pre-Inca city in the Cusco region. Attributed to the Wari culture (around 1000 AD), this site was strategically designed for defensive purposes, featuring robust ground-level walls and entrances solely at the second level. While the masonry here may appear less refined compared to the Inca style, Pikillacta has yielded valuable artifacts, such as miniature turquoise-colored figures, now on display at the Archaeological Museum of Cusco.
Your final stop on the way back to Cusco is Tipón, an often-overlooked Inca complex comprising a walled enclosure with intricate channels, hydraulic works, and well-preserved Inca baths, some of which are still functional.
